My dad had funny retorts in some of our conversations. In discussions about “experts” he would often say, “Experts are just drips under pressure.”  That’s harsh. In this day and age, experts in any given field are often the first people we turn to for advice when we want to hear an educated opinion.

Sitting in on a Q&A about Social Media, I heard a business owner say, “We give away all of our best ideas.” Turns out he had a blog on his website and they made a habit of telling people what they did and how they did it. He went on to say, “Our business is doing really well but we don’t know why … we don’t think it’s our social media.”

I think he missed the point! He was actually doing exactly what he needed to do and was being rewarded with success. Marketer Seth Godin sums it up, “Share your expertise generously so people recognize it and depend on you.”

If you are sharing your expertise and your business is thriving, I would venture to say it’s because people are attracted by that quality and have determined you are an expert at what you do.

How can you tell people that you are an expert in your chosen line of work? Have you considered a blog as a vehicle to share your thoughts?

  1. Great question John! Let’s see how people are commenting here and perhaps you can share your expertise on how they can get started!
